Bloomington Water Officials Pledge Aggressive Action After Finding Contaminates In Tap Water

Last updated on Monday, February 8, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Water officials are pledging aggressive action after discovering levels of contaminates in its tap water near maximum levels.

Bloomington's Interim Utilities Director John Langley says the level of disinfected by-products caused by the use of chlorine have been on the rise year after year. In fact, by November of last year testing showed the levels were just shy of the maximum contaminate levels set by the EPA.

According to Langley, having too much of the byproducts can cause cancer based on 70 years of exposure.

But one mother told WTHR 13 Investigates that she believes her daughter's thyroid cancer is related to environmental issues in Bloomington.

Kelly Scott says she wishes officials had taken more aggressive action 22 years ago before her then 11-year-old daughter got sick.
