Last updated on Friday, February 19, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Utilities reported an accidental chlorine release from its Dillman Road Wastewater Treatment Plant on Wednesday, February 17.

The release was the result of an incorrect chlorine feed pump setting in the plant service water system. A higher level of chlorine than is optimal was discharged into Clear Creek.

No visible impacts on the Clear Creek receiving stream were found.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was notified of the incident, and IDEM and asked that the Plant Superintendent file an incident report within 24 hours which was done.

No further IDEM action is expected.

Investigation into the cause of the discharge is in process. Operator error is suspected.

The chlorine was being used in routine maintenance of the wastewater treatment equipment.
