(BLOOMFIELD) - Bloomfield has received a $200,000 matching grant from the Department of Natural Resources for the town's pool.

The town's pool was closed before the seasonal opening in 2012 due to safety concerns with the infrastructure.

Bloomfield Pool Committee person Sophie Haywood told the Greene County Daily World they have raised about $190,000 since the pool closed three years ago. The committee will need to come up with $10,000 to meet the match requirement.

Now the town will need to hire an engineering firm to provide up-to-date information for the project because the last inspection was just before the closure of the pool in 2012.

The project, as a whole, is expected to cost about $500,000 for the necessary upgrades, including zero entrance point to walk directly into the water, a few slides in the four-foot area and two diving boards. The drainage system and shower room will be upgraded, as well as a new gutter system. There are also plans for a splash pad area. The committee would also like to include new furniture with large umbrellas for shade.

Haywood says it will take about a year to have the funds released and then construction can begin.

As part of the necessary steps for the grant, the council had to fill the vacant positions on the Park Board. Sitting board member Jo Ann Carmichael was retained on a one-year term. Jim Medina was added on a two-year term, Susie Schulte will serve a three-year term and Petey Haywood will serve a four-year term.
