Bedford Man Arrested After Driving While Intoxicated And Crashing Through Quarry Gate

Last updated on Thursday, February 11, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after Lawrence County police received several reports of an intoxicated driver.

Callers say a man driving a red Ford Super-Duty pickup with a white camper shell was traveling southbound on State Road 37 from the Lawrence/Monroe county line.

Callers then reported the vehicle had turned southbound on Old State Road 37.

"All of our officers were in other parts of the county and an Oolitic officer assisted in observing for the vehicle," Sheriff Mike Branham wrote in an email.

Oolitic Deputy Town Marshal BJ McDowell spotted the truck traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Old State Road 37 North, from Old Needmore School Road.

Officer McDowell attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused and then crashed through the gate of the quarry located at the dead end of Old State Road 37 North and went onto Indiana Limestone property.

McDowell, after about five minutes of pursuing the truck, was able to get the driver to stop.

Officers from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police arrived to assist.

"Officers noticed that the driver, 62-year-old Gary Bullock, appeared to be impaired, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and [had] open containers of alcoholic beverages in his truck," Sheriff Branham says.

Bullock failed field sobriety and breath tests and was arrested on the charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent or greater and OWI endangerment.

"Our officers took over the investigations both the crash and criminal at the request of Oolitic," Sheriff Branham added.
