(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after he allegedly used a fake $20 bill to purchase tobacco and received $16 in cash back.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 36-year-old Steven Skyes of Bedford attempted to make a purchase at Circle K using the fake $20.

The clerk used a counterfeit detector pen on the bill and determined it was fake. Sykes became upset and stormed out of the service station.

Not long after, a second man went into the Circle K to try and make a purchase using the same fake $20 bill. The clerk used the pen on the bill again and determined it was counterfeit. She knew it was the same bill because she could see the mark left on the bill from the first time she checked it.

The second man then contacted police about the fake bill. He told a Bedford Police officer that he was approached by Sykes in the parking lot of Circle K. The two did not know each other, but Sykes asked the man for change for a $20 bill.

The man only had $16, but he offered a can of tobacco in addition to the $16 for the $20 bill.

Officers then spoke with Sykes, who admitted he learned that the $20 bill was fake at Circle K. He also said he asked a man he met in the parking lot for change for the bill, and that they agreed to trade $16 and tobacco for the $20.

Sykes was arrested Monday on a warrant charging him with a Level 6 felony of counterfeiting. He posted a $755 cash bond and was released cash Monday morning.
