(BEDFORD) - Two people were arrested after a shoplifting incident at Walmart early this morning.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers were called by store security just after 2:30 a.m.

When police arrived security had stopped a woman and two other individuals with her.

Police arrested 26-year-old Jasmine Merideth of Mitchell on a charge of theft.

According to Parsley, Merideth had attempted to leave the store with more than $230 of unpaid for merchandise.

"She had stuffed CDs, DVDs, makeup, hygiene items, a bra and other items into her pants, under her shirt and into a large purse she was carrying," Parsley says.

The two other individuals also had items, but they were not charged because they had not attempted to leave the store.

"So they couldn't be charged with theft," Parsley says. "The items were taken and the two signed no trespass orders preventing them from entering the store again."

Merideth was arrested and the other men left the store, but before they exited one of the men asked the officer if they could have "their friend's orange flash light."

"The officers who thought the flashlight was stolen didn't at first realize it had belonged to one of the men. The request to have it back made the officer suspicious. So, without the man knowing, they looked inside the flashlight and found a baggie containing a white powdery substance," Parsley added.

Not knowing who the flashlight belonged to the officer returned it to the man requesting it.

"The officer then stopped the man's vehicle as they left the store," Parsley says.

According to Parsley, when officers noticed the flashlight in the vehicle they asked who it belonged to and that is when 22-year-old Brady Ferguson said the flashlight belonged to him.

Ferguson was arrested on a charge of possession of meth.
