(SHOALS) - A Wednesday afternoon traffic stop ended with the arrest of two men.

At 3:15 p.m. Senior Trooper Jarrod Lents stopped a green 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup after the driver disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of Weisbach Road and Sherfick School Road near Shoals.

Trooper Lents pulled the truck over and began speaking with the two male occupants. He soon learned that the driver, 39-year-old Mitchell Newton of Dubois, was driving with a suspended driver's license and had prior convictions for the same offense.

The passenger, 39-year-old Travis Stine of French Lick, gave the trooper a false name. Trooper Lents later learned and confirmed Stine's identity and learned he was wanted on a felony theft charge in Crawford County.

Lents then asked for the Shoals Police Department K-9 Asher to respond to the scene. He and his handler Major Andy Burkhardt and Martin County Sheriff Travis Roush responded. Asher alerted police to possible narcotics inside the vehicle.

Officers searched the vehicle and found marijuana, a metal smoking pipe, and two syringes.

Officers later learned the narcotics and paraphernalia belonged to Stine.

Both Newton and Stine were arrested without incident and taken to the Martin County Jail.

Newton is facing charges of driving with a suspended driver's license with prior convictions.

Stine is facing charges of illegal possession of a syringe, possession of marijuana, false informing and possession of drug paraphernalia.
