(BEDFORD) - Sunday is the deadline to nominate someone as a torchbearer for the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay.

Marla Jones, a member of the Lawrence County Bicentennial Committee and the county's Indiana Bicentennial coordinator, says so far the committee has received about 45 nominations.

According to officials anyone who has made a significant contributions to their community can be nominated.

More than 1,800 Hoosiers will be chosen as torchbearers.

On Dec. 11, the day the state received its statehood 200 years ago, the torch will arrive in Indianapolis and light a large cauldron. That bicentennial torch will be carried from September 9 to October 15 and will pass through all 92 counties, covering 2,300 miles.

The relay will begin in Corydon, site of the first state capital. It will arrive in Lawrence County Sept. 14, entering from the south. Because much of the Lawrence County's route will be in rural areas, some of the route will be traveled by car, but other areas the torchbearer will walk or run with the torch.

Once the torch arrives in Bedford, a celebration will be held in Harp Commons on J street. A bicentennial mobile museum will also be there that day.

Nominees can be living or deceased. If deceased, a family member or associate can carry the torch on behalf of the nominee.

A local committee will review and submit the selections to the state committee for final approval. The torchbearers will be announced in either March or April.

If you'd like to nominate someone, you can pick up a form at either Mitchell or Bedford city halls. Those forms must be turned back in by Friday. Nominations sent by mail must be postmarked by January 30.
