(JOHNSON CO.) - Authorities say a Martinsville woman making a New Year’s Day skydiving jump died after she was injured in a hard landing.
The Johnson County coroner says 54-year-old Teresa Woods of Martinsville died Friday at a local hospital. An autopsy is planned for Monday.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says police and medics responded about 11:40 a.m. Friday after Woods landed hard after her parachute successfully opened.
Sheriff Cox says Woods was supposed to land at the Franklin Flying Field but she landed just south of there in a field about 20 miles south of Indianapolis. She was believed to be an experienced skydiver, because she jumped alone.
Woods was the third of three skydivers to jump from the plane, and one person who was still on board told investigators Woods' reserve parachute had opened.
The coroner is trying to figure out if something went wrong with Woods' gear.
"We've got to be able to rule out whether it was equipment or whether it was... the diver's fault, things of that nature. We basically got to rule everything out and come to one conclusion," said Craig Lutz, the Johnson County coroner.
Investigators spent Friday evening analyzing her gear, including her parachute.
