(UNDATED) - Lawrence County Commissioner, 40-year-old Chris May of Bedford, officially announced his intentions to seek the seat for Indiana State Representative District 65.
Currently in his third term as a Lawrence County Commissioner, May states that his experience at the municipal level of government has prepared him for this desired new role, "After having served as Commissioner I feel the need to take that insight and experience to the State House and really be an advocate for the needs I see on a daily basis," states May. "I will encourage open lines of communication not only between all levels of government but also between government and the citizens who government serves."
Raised in Oolitic, May is a lifelong resident of Lawrence County. May and his wife Amanda currently reside in Bedford with a son and daughter. Amanda is the principal at Parkview Intermediate School in Bedford.
"Public education is obviously of utmost importance to me personally," states May, "Seeing the challenges that my wife faces everyday as well as the programs that are successful for her school puts me at a unique advantage in being able to fight for what educators want and need."
A graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and Vincennes University, May currently works at Whitney Tool as a sales engineer.
"Accountability, fiscally responsible government, leadership, and a pro-business approach are the key areas for the growth and progress of South Central Indiana. I will bring those values with me to the Statehouse," states May.
Together with his wife he also owns and operates Hoosier Tech Properties, a small business providing residential housing.
"I am proud to say that I am a pro-business candidate. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of our economy in South Central Indiana. I will tirelessly fight high taxes and job-killing regulations on their behalf."
May goes on to say, "I see how small businesses really are the fabric that can knit rural communities together. It alarms me that big corporations have so much power at the state government level."
Deeply involved in his community, May is a member of the following: Bedford Masonic Lodge #14, Sons of the American Legion Gillen Post #33, Springmill FOP Lodge #172, and Stone City FOP Lodge #94. He is also an active board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County.
"Community is everything to me,"says May. "I will offer the citizens of District 65 a vision that includes the continued economic development of South Central Indiana, the safety of our citizens, a good quality of life, and first-rate services. I believe that the way to achieve these goals is through rigorous fiscal responsibility."
