(BEDFORD) - Republican businessman and pharmacist, 36-year-old Josh Anderson of Bedford announced his intention to run for the District 44 Indiana State Senate seat, currently held by Senator Brent Steele.

Steele has historically been a proponent of the younger generation getting involved in the legislative process. After meeting with Senator Steele about the open seat, Anderson was encouraged to run.

Anderson graduated from Butler University with a doctorate of pharmacy in 2007 and currently is part owner and operator of Crowders Pharmacy, Lincoln Plaza Pharmacy and Med Shoppe Pharmacy in Bedford and Panacea Pharmacy in Bloomington.

"With all of the changes going on with healthcare, someone who has real experience in healthcare should represent what the population really needs instead of lobbyists and special interest groups speaking for them," said Anderson. "I have seen so much waste and fraudulent activities in the field of healthcare that raise prices for my patients and I feel that I can really make a difference at the legislative level."

Anderson, a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, is married to Laura (Hodges) Anderson formally of Portage, IN, and graduate of Butler University and the Richard G. Lugar Series of Excellence. Together they have three boys, seven year old twins and a four year old.

"My wife and I have invested quite a bit of ourselves into our community. We want our boys to be proud of where they come from and have job opportunities when the time comes." Josh and Laura were one of the founders of Stone Cutters Cafe & Roastery located on the historic downtown square in Bedford. "We are proud to be a part of the revitalization efforts in our city."

Being a father of three boys, education is of utmost importance to Anderson. "I feel that legislators are too involved in the process. We need to be listening to the teachers and other education professionals to improve our schools. They are on the frontline and nobody better understands their needs than them."

The drug epidemic is a focus for Anderson. He served on a task force for the Attorney General Greg Zoeller for prescription drug abuse task force. Anderson states,"I am proud of what we have accomplished, but there is so much more work to be done. Crowders was the first pharmacy in the state to implement the yellow jug prescription take back program, getting unused drugs out of medicine cabinets and keeping them out of our water system, among many other benefits."

Independant Pharmacy has always been a passion of Anderson. Small business, he believes, is truly the heart beat of America. " America was founded on small business and entrepreneurs. This spirit should not only be protected but also celebrated."
