IU Freshman Charged With Dealing Drugs Out Of Dorm

Last updated on Thursday, January 14, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University freshman is charged with dealing drugs out of his campus dorm room.

IU Police arrested 18-year-old Kaden Ignelzi at Wright Quad on Sunday.

Officers received a tip about the smell of marijuana coming from a dorm room and according to court paperwork, Ignelzi admitted to possessing marijuana and allowed an officer to search his room.

That officer found a safe inside Ignelzi's closet that the teen refused to open.

"That is my private property and you cannot search that," an officer quoted Ignelzi as saying in the court documents.

Officers obtained a search warrant and upon opening the safe, they found 80 Xanax pills separated into three plastic bags, a fake identification card, two glass smoking devices, and cash inside. The bags were labeled with the amount of pills inside each one.

"Ignelzi ... stated that the Xanax was his and that 'I bought it all from a guy I know back home and brought it back to school to use for the entire semester,'" an officer said in the documents.

Ignelzi also told the officer that the money was given to him by his mother when she dropped him off at school.

IU Police Captain Andy Stephenson told FOX59 that prescription drug abuse appears to be a growing problem among students, in some cases replacing previous issues with alcohol abuse.

"Now there's a trend that's moving toward prescription drug abuse and we're seeing more and more of that in the last several years," Stephenson said.

Ignelzi was charged with dealing in a controlled substance, a felony, as well as three misdemeanors. According to an IU spokesperson, he is still enrolled as a student at the school.
