Indiana University Banning Hoverboards From Dorms

Last updated on Monday, January 11, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University is not allowing students to bring hoverboards into the dorms because the vehicles could spontaneously combust while charging.

Mark Land, the associate vice president of public affairs for IU, says the fire risk is exponentially greater in the dorms, where students live in such close proximity to each other. While the risk is mostly associated with charging the battery, Land says the university would adapt their policy if new risks arise.

Other universities, such as Butler and the University of Evansville, have already banned the self-balancing scooter altogether.
