Explore Lesser-Known Parts Of Monroe Lake In Winter Hike Series

(MONROE LAKE) - Explore off-trail areas around Monroe Lake not regularly visited by the public during the annual Winter Exploration Hike Series, January through March.

Monroe Lake interpretive naturalist Jill Vance will lead the hikes. Each will last 90 minutes to two hours.

"I don't plan a set path," she said. "We go where the terrain and inspiration take us."

Vance does not recommend the hikes for young children, people with mobility concerns, or those with no hiking experience.

The hikes are free, but advance registration is required. Each hike is limited to 20 people. Registrants are emailed driving directions to the meeting location and additional details the day before hike.

The hikes are:

January 12, 1:30 p.m.: Upper Friendship Fields and Forest (Stillwater-Northfork Wildlife Area); register by January 10 at bit.ly/wehs2016-1.
January 26, 1:30 p.m.: Lower Friendship Fields and Floodplains (Stillwater-Northfork Wildlife Area); register by January 24 at bit.ly/wehs2016-2.
February 9, 1:30 p.m.: Combs Road (Southfork Marshes); register by February 7 at bit.ly/wehs2016-3.
February 23, 1:30 p.m.: Kirks Ford Road (Southfork Marshes); register by February 21 at bit.ly/wehs2016-4.
March 1, 2:30 p.m.: Geode Hill (Fairfax SRA); register by Feb. 28 at bit.ly/wehs2016-5.
March 15, 2:30 p.m.: Moores Creek (Moores Creek SRA); register by March 13 at bit.ly/wehs2016-6.
