Don't Fall Victim To Federal Jury Scam

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is warning residents not to fall victim to a scam involving fines levied for missing federal jury duty.

According to Sheriff Brad Swain, the department has received several complaints that an unidentified person is calling homes and posing as a Monroe County Sheriff's deputy. The caller tells the person that they need to pay a fee for missing federal jury duty or risk being arrested.

The scammer tells the person to purchase a debit card from Kroger on Second Street and call a provided number to transfer money from the debit card to another account.Police say the number is an international telephone number.

Sheriff Swain warns residents to not fall victim to this scam, that neither the Monroe County Sheriff's Office nor any law enforcement agency collects fees over the telephone.

Anyone who is contacted with a request similar to this scam, or who has given money to someone they believe is a scam artist to call the the Monroe County Sheriff's Department at (812) 349-2780.
