Brown Co. Property Owners Could Lose Homestead Exemptions If They Don't Verify It

Last updated on Thursday, January 28, 2016

(NASHVILLE) - Almost 200 Brown County property owners are set to lose their homestead exemption for property taxes if they do not verify it before Wednesday, February 10.

According to Brown County Auditor Beth Mulry, the Indiana homestead deduction allows single people or married couples to exempt a single residence and surrounding one acre of property from being counted for property taxes.

The Auditor's office sent letters out August 4 notifying resident that needed to verify their homestead exemptions.

So far only 85 people responded. There are 194 properties that still have not responded.

The full list of properties that need verification are listed on this website.

Mulry said even if a property owner misses the February 10 deadline, they can still have their homestead exemption reinstated once it is verified.
