Volunteers Needed To Start After School Program In Linton

Last updated on Tuesday, December 22, 2015

(LINTON) - Volunteers are needed to get an after school program off the ground after the first of the year for students at Linton-Stockton and White River Valley schools.

Sabrina Westfall, of the Greene County Daily World reports, Linton First Baptist Church will be hosting the after school program Monday through Friday from the time school is out until 5:45 p.m. Volunteer Kim Collins said there will be a $10 registration fee for the program with a weekly fee of $5, which covers the cost of a daily snack. For the first semester, the program has 20 spots available. If there is a need and the after school program goes well, organizers may be able to expand and allow more students next school year.

The program is geared towards students in grades two through eight.

The after school program would like to have volunteers who dedicate one day a week, or more, to helping with students after school each week.

Right after school there will be a time period for games and socialization, followed by time for homework. If a child does not have homework that day, they can read a book or take part in quieter activities.

The after school program would also like community leaders to participate in volunteering as a way to teach students about various types of jobs. These volunteers can come in one time to present to the students or stop by every couple of months. They would not be expected to designate time every week.

Every other week, the program will be offering educational workshops, which will focus on cooking, life skills, arts, gardening and more.

Volunteers will need to pass a background check.
