(BLOOMINGTON) - Members of Phi Kappa Psi at IU Bloomington will not be returning to their fraternity house after the holiday break.
The national fraternity and the university made a joint decision to suspend IU's chapter over student code of conduct violations during the fall semester.
According to the Herald Times, although specifics of the violations have not been detailed, IU spokesman Mark Land says they are related to hazing and substance abuse. The disciplinary action is being enforced by the university as well as the national chapter of the fraternity.
National Chapter Phi Kappa Psi Spokesperson Garret Walton says the specific details are not something the organization is sharing with the public. However, the depth of involvement warranted suspending all chapter activities.
Phi Kappa Psi surrendered its IU chapter charter to national headquarters on December 19. The fraternity has had a chapter at the Bloomington campus for 146 years - it was started just seven years after the fraternity's first chapter was founded at Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1852.
This makes Phi Kappa Psi the second Greek organization on the Bloomington campus to receive a major behavior related punishment in 3 months. In November, the IU chapter of the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega was terminated after a video leaked which showed members of the fraternity taking part in a sex act.
