Shoe Drive Raises More Than $3,000 For White River Humane Society

Last updated on Wednesday, December 16, 2015

(BEDFORD) - The White River Humane Society with the help of the public collected more than 8,250 pairs of shoes earning the shelter more than $3,000 to care for the homeless animals of Lawrence County.

Wooftrax, the website that sponsored the shoe drive, sent the shoes to Florida and from there they will go to countries such as Haiti, where they are repaired and then sold.

Board President Buddy Hendricks says several area churches, schools like Burris Elementary and Parkview Intermediate and businesses like Parker Group Insurance, Regenerations, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store help with the shoe drive.

"However if someone brought one pair of shoes, it was just as appreciated," he added. "I want to thank several of the Board Members for coming and helping to bag and load shoes on several occasions."

The shoes were stored at a storage facility of Jim and Carol Richardson until they could be shipped.

"However the biggest thanks go to Eden Dillman and her fiance Nick Stafford," Hendrick added. "They spent many many hours going lots of places and picking up shoes, hauling them to the storage units, and bagging many of them up. Hey a pair of shoes is not very heavy, but a bag of 25 pairs of shoes is a different story."

Administrative Director for WRHS Eden Dillman is credited for finding the fundraise.

The shelter plans to host the event again next years, so start saving those shoes.

Gently worn shoes can be dropped off at the shelter or donors can call the shelter at (812) 279-2457 to arrange for pickup.
