November 2015: Boy Receives New Heart; Teen Pleads Guilty To Murder; Mayoral Candidate Wants Recount; Stonecutters Place Opens; Murder Conviction Stands

(UNDATED) - In November, Cohen Austin received a new heart; Bedford teen pleads guilty to murder; Mitchell Mayoral Candidate Danny Terrell filed for a recount saying some resident who didn’t live within the city limits of Mitchell voted; Stonecutters Place held a grand opening; a man convicted of murder will not get his conviction reviewed and took office, won awards, titles and honors.

Mayoral Candidate Files Petition For Recount

On November 13, Mitchell Mayoral Candidate Dan Terrell filed a petition for an election vote recount in the Lawrence County Clerk's Office.

Clerk Myron Rainey says the petition was filed because Terrell believes residents who did not live within the city limits cast their vote for mayor.

In the November 3th election Independent John "JD" England edged out Republican candidate Dan Terrell by four votes 499 to 495 to claim the Mayor's seat. Democrat Eugene "Pud" Terrell received 229 with Bill Conley receiving 8.

Terrell is requesting the court to enter an order appointing a recount commission, set a date, time and place for the recount and further order impound of the election materials

Audrey Schlegel Chosen As Distinguished Young Women

Audrey Schlegel, a senior at Mitchell High School, was chosen November 14 to represent Lawrence County in the 2016 Distinguished Young Women scholarship program.

Ribbon Cutting And Open House For Stonecutters Place

A ribbon cutting and open house was held November 20 for the new Stonecutters Place Senior Apartments in Bedford.

Stonecutters Place,part of the Stellar project, is located at 1030 16th Street near the Bedford Police Department. The building houses 30 apartments for those over age 62.

Former Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton To Receive Presidential Medal Of Freedom

Indiana University faculty member and former longtime Indiana congressman Lee Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony November 24.

He is one of 17 recipients of the 2015 medal named by President Barack Obama. The list comprises luminaries from the worlds of government, public service, the arts and sports, including such well-known figures as baseball star Willie Mays, singer Barbra Streisand and film director and producer Steven Spielberg.

Hamilton is a distinguished scholar in the IU School of Global and International Studies and a professor of practice in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He served for 16 years as director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, which he founded in 1999. Previously he represented Indiana in Congress for 34 years.

BNL High School Band Director Jim Jones Conducted Honor Band

Bedford North Lawrence High School Band Director Jim Jones conducted the southwest region Indiana Bandmasters Association 2015 All-District Honor Band November 21-22 at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.

Musicians from 16 area high schools will take part in the 58-piece ensemble.

David Shircliff Named New Lawrence County Chief Public Defender

In November, David Shircliff was named the new Lawrence County Public Defender's Agency Chief Public Defender.

He is replacing John Haury, who was named to the position after Lorinda Youngcourt moved from the area. Shortly after his appointment, however, Haury died unexpectedly while playing tennis.

Shircliff, 50, has been a public defender for more than 20 years.

Indiana Supreme Court Denies Review Of John Myers II Murder Conviction

In November, the Indiana Supreme Court, in a unanimous order, denied a request from convicted killer John Myers II to review his case.

40-year-old Myers is serving a 65-year sentence in Michigan City for his 2006 murder conviction in the killing of 19-year-old Jill Behrman. The IU freshman disappeared during a May 2000 bike ride. Her skeletal remains were discovered nearly three years later by a hunter in a remote Morgan County field about 15 miles north of Bloomington.

Behrman had been fatally shot in the head.

Cohen Austin Receives A New Heart

On November 24, the family of 4-year-old Cohen Austin received the call they have been waiting on - there was a new heart available.

Cohen came out of surgery that morning and was doing well.

After receiving the call that afternoon the family had three hours to get Cohen to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Cohen suffered from an enlarge heart with restrictive cardiomyopathy, the rarest of five types. His only chance of survival was a new heart.

Teen Pleads Guilty To Murder

Dillon Hicks pleaded guilty November 30 to murder in the February 2014 beating death of 43-year-old Rodney Allender.

Hicks, who will turn 18 on December 13, was in Lawrence Superior Court II for a change-of-plea hearing during which he also pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit burglary, a Class B felony.

Judge William Sleva, in accepting the plea agreement that was filed on November 24, dismissed the third count, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class A felony.

He is the last of three teenagers who were charged with murder in Allender's death. The other two, Austin Curtis and Taylor Flynn, already have been sentenced after also changing their pleas to guilty.
