Morgan County Firefighter Found Guilty Of Stealing Welding Equipment

Last updated on Friday, December 11, 2015

(MARTINSVILLE) - A Martinsville jury found Brian Etchison guilty of stealing welding equipment from the Washington Township Fire Department in Morgan County.

Etchison was arrested in January 2015 on a charge of felony theft after he stole the welding equipment from the department.

Etchison, who had worked for the department for several years was placed on administrative leave after his arrest.

According to court documents, the fire chief installed surveillance cameras throughout the department because he noticed small thefts of prescription medication. Authorities have not said if Etchison was involved in that specific crime, but they did accused him of stealing a surveillance camera and a welder.

In court documents, Etchison admitted he took a camera down, but he told police he placed it on the fire chief's desk.

According to the report, "Etchison advised that he removed the camera because it was not pointing in the direction that he personally felt was necessary."

According to court documents, on December 27, 2014 Indiana State Police received a call about the stolen equipment because someone spotted it at Etchison's home.

The Morgan county sheriff requested that ISP investigate this case because Etchison previously worked for the sheriff's office. A special prosecutor was then assigned to the case.
