(MORGAN CO.) - A Michigan man was killed and two Morgan County Deputies were injured trying to save him after a vehicle drove into a retention pond along State Road 37 in Morgan County early Sunday morning.
24-year-old Evan Clendening was transported to IU Health-Methodist Hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries late Sunday morning, according to a statement from Capt. Brent Worth of the Morgan County Sheriff's Office. No other occupants of the vehicle were located by rescue workers.
The incident happened shortly after midnight near the intersection of State Road 37 and Old State Road 37, just south of Egbert Rd.
Deputies arrived quickly and found the vehicle submerged in the pond. Deputies Jeremy Long and Jonathan Herrington, Captain Tom York of the Washington Twp. Fire Department, and a bystander jumped in the water to rescue any occupants. They broke glass from the vehicle, removed the Clendening through the sunroof, and began resuscitation attempts.
Both Deputies were transported to St. Francis-Mooresville where they were treated and released for cold exposure. York was also treated for hypothermic conditions at an area hospital.
The investigation is ongoing by officers and the accident reconstruction team, but it is believed Clendening may have been northbound on SR 37 when his vehicle crossed to the other side of the highway and then plunged into the pond.
