(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners say landowners are responsible for trees that become safety issues along county roadways.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent David Holmes says he has received several phone calls from residents wanting highway crews to remove damaged or dying trees from the edges of county roads.

But the commissioners say if the trees are not on the county right-of-way it is the homeowner's responsibility.

"Legally we can not cut down a tree unless it is on our right-of-way," says County Attorney Dave Smith.

Holmes says two men were injured in the last two years downing damaged or dying trees.

"It is dangerous and hard work," Commissioner Bill Spreen added. "We don't have the manpower or equipment. We are not talking about a few trees but thousands."
