IU Student's Death Ruled Suicide

(BLOOMINGTON) - The death of Indiana University student Joseph Smedley has been ruled a suicide.

According to Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer, 20-year-old Smedley drowned.

The sophomore's body was found the evening of Friday, October 2 in Griffy Lake. The lake is located off Headley Road on the city's north side.

His sister had reported him missing earlier that week after she received 4 a.m. text messages from Smedley saying he was planning on leaving the country.

Bloomington Police ruled that there was no foul play in Smedley's death.

Meyer was waiting on the results of a toxicology tests before ruling on a cause of death.
