(BLOOMINGTON) - The Indiana University Student Association could be partnering with the Uber car service next semester to offer free safe rides to students when IU Safety Escort rides are not available.
According to the Herald Times, IUSA chief of special projects and partnerships Samuel Gentry, the group first began throwing around ideas for a partnership at the beginning of this year's fall semester.
Officials are still working out the details, but students whose wait times exceed 15 minutes for USC's "Campus Cruiser" rides are offered a code to use with Ubers.
IU's Safety Escort rides are free rides available to students within the city limits and operates from 8 p.m. to 1:45 a.m. every night. Uber rides would be used from about 2 a.m. to around 6 a.m. If the pilot program launches, it would provide codes to students for up to three Uber rides per semester, paid for by IUSA.
Officials hope to have the program up and running by at the beginning of the 2016 spring semester.
