(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Children and Youth awarded the commission’s first annual S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Awards at a ceremony Tuesday December 15, 2015 to four area youth.
The S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Award recognizes students who Act Generously, Grow and Earn Respect. Award submissions included students who have volunteered with their faith communities, schools or area non-profits, assisted a friend or neighbor in need, mentored a younger students, exemplified a positive attitude among peers, showed respect for others or improved academically.
The inaugural group of S.W.A.G.G.E.R. recipients include: K-3 Category: Isley Maxwell, Fairview Elementary; Grade 4-6 Category: Lucinda Soots, Harmony School; Grade 7-8 Category: Molly Crecelius, Harmony School and Grade 9-12 Category: Isaac Young, Academy of Science and Entrepreneurship..
"We are so proud of the young people recognized with the 2015 S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Awards. This amazing group of young people stand out, not because of anything they've done for personal gain, but because, to a person they are reaching out to help others," said Beverly Calender-Anderson, Director, City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department. "S.W.A.G.G.E.R. is to conduct yourself in a way that would automatically earn respect, and the Commission on the Status of Children and Youth recognized young people who exemplify this definition."
Mayor Mark Kruzan acknowledged all S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Award Recipients with a congratulatory proclamation. Other prizes were generously donated by Ivy Tech John Waldron Lifelong Learning, Cardinal Stage Company, Mother Bear's Pizza, WonderLab and the Indiana Memorial Union Bowling and Billiards Center.
