Two Dead, Toddler In Critical Condition After Head-On Collision

(ENGLISH) - Two people are dead after a head-on collision Thursday on State Road 64.

At about 9:57 a.m., Crawford County police received 911 calls reporting a head-on accident involving a tractor-trailer and passenger car.

According to police, a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 23-year-old Daniel Ray Allen of Marengo had crossed the centerline and hit the semi driven by 59-year-old Tim Mehling of Huntingburg.

Police say Mehling was traveling east on State Road 64 and was attempting to turn on the Mulzer Quarry Road when the collision happened.

Allen was freed from the wreckage by first responders of the English Fire Department. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown Air Evac helicopter to Harrison County Hospital for treatment. He died later at the hospital.

His passenger, Carrie Walker of English, died at the scene.

Police say neither Walker or Allen were wearing seatbelts during the incident.

Her 2-year-old child, who was in the rear seat of the car in a child safety seat, was flown by helicopter to Kosair Children's hospital with life threatening injuries. The child was listed critical condition with multiple fractures.

Mehling, the driver of the semi, was not injured during the incident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff's Department. Toxicology results are pending.

Assisting at the scene were English Volunteer Fire Department, Marengo Volunteer Fire Department, Crawford County EMS, AirEvac.
