Springville Man Arrested After Taking Illegal Drugs Into Courthouse Plaza

Last updated on Thursday, November 5, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Springville man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he was caught by security taking four different drugs into Courthouse Plaza.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham, 29-year-old Joshua Earl was walking through the security checkpoint in the Courthouse Plaza when the metal detector sounded.

A security officer then used a hand scanner to pinpoint what set off the alarm.

It alerted police that something was in Earl's pocket.

Earl pulled out a white plastic bag which contained a white powder. Earl then ran for the door and the officer began chasing him. The officer was able to catch Earl at the front door and called dispatch for assistance.

Other officers responded to the scene and search Earl. During that search they found two clear bags containing white pills and a foil wrapper that contained suboxone strips. Police believe the foil packages set off the alarm on the scanner.

The white powdery substance in the baggie field tested positive for meth. The pills were identified as oxycodone and a legend drug. Earl did not have a prescription for either the oxycodone or the suboxone strips.

Earl was arrested on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, possession of a legend drug, possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of a schedule III controlled substance and possession of meth.

Sheriff Branham says that the Courthouse Plaza is located within 500 feet of St. Vincent de Paul school, so Earl is facing a higher level of felony charges.
