Last updated on Monday, November 23, 2015

(SALEM) - Washington County Sheriff Roger Newlon says charges are pending against a driver who crashed head-on into another motorist Thursday evening.

The crash occurred on State Road 56 East at Morgan's Market around 5 p.m.

Sheriff Newlon says 32-year-old John Zachary Bennett of Campbellsburg could face charges, pending the results of a blood test.

According to a police report, Bennett was traveling westbound in a 1993 Honda ALX when he drove across the centerline, striking an eastbound 1996 Toyota driven by 66-year-old Madeleine Groff of Salem.

Groff suffered a possible broken hip and was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Salem Hospital, then transferred by helicopter to University of Louisville.

Mariah Smith of Pekin, a passenger in Bennett's car, suffered a possible broken leg and lacerations. She was flown by helicopter to a Louisville hospital.

Bennett was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent for treatment.

An Indiana State Police crash reconstructionist was called to the scene.

Salem Fire Rescue and Washington County Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
