(MITCHELL) - Mitchell Community Schools students will be using Chromebooks and iPads in lieu of textbooks during a pilot transition program beginning in January.
The Times-Mail reports that the school system learned it was one of 13 recipients of Innovation Planning Grants awarded by the Indiana Department of Education for helping schools replace textbooks with computers.
Assistant Superintendents Phil Storm told school board members that the devices will be introduced in Kevin Giggy's French and English classes along with classes taught by Matt Sowders, Lindsay Pritchett and Doug Thomas.
At the sixth-grade level, all instruction will be using Chromebooks. Seventh and eighth-grade students will be introduced to the program at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.
Storm added that the goal is to have one iPad per student in grades K-3 and one Chromebook per student in grades 4-12 by the opening of school in 2016-2017.
Earlier this year, the board approved contracts with a company called Five Star to serve as a training provider and with Edmentum to serve as the curriculum provider. Five Star will provide an impact analysis of the pilot program.
