(BLOOMFIELD) - Effective December 1 State Representative Matt Ubelhor will resign from his seat from the Indiana House of Representatives.
Ubelhor represented District 62 which encompasses most of Greene County (except for Wright Township), Daviess, Martin and Monroe counties.
Ubelhor's announcement comes just prior to the 2016 legislative session.
Ubelhor, a Republican, was elected for his third term in 2014 as the representative for District 62 and currently serves as the assistant majority whip.
There is one year left in his term.
According to the Greene County Daily World, Ubelhor is resigning because he is working a considerable distance away from the district.
"I cannot perform the duties of my current job correctly and serve the district correctly. It is taking away too much time, and there is no way I can fulfill and do the jobs I need to do for my employer and for the people in my district," Ubelhor added.
Ubelhor says this is one of the toughest decisions he has had to make.
"District 62 is made up of a lot of hard-working people, who go to work everyday and I have tried to representative them in the statehouse," he added. "I am grateful for their support, and over the last three elections they have elected me to the job -- it is very humbling. I did not take this decision lightly."
Ubelhor will continue to work with his friends and neighbors to identify and support conservative leaders who "will keep our state and our community on the right track.
"In addition, I will keep the door open for other opportunities to serve the great state of Indiana," Ubelhor added.
According to Ubelhor, he never set out to become a career politician, but wished only to provide a thoughtful voice for the families and small businesses he has been fortunate to represent.
After retirement, Ubelhor would consider entering into public service.
Greene County GOP Chairmen Paul Clark explained the process of finding a replacement for Ubelhor.
"The State Republican Chairman will call a caucus.
According to Clark, once the letter goes out to establish the caucus, candidates will file paperwork with the state party chairman prior to the caucus.
Anybody who lives in the district can file.
