(SHOALS) - The Martin County Clerk's Office has received a grant the Indiana Supreme Court Division of State Court Administration, to purchase six new document scanners, and a new server to help with the electronic or e-filing process for the county.

E-filing will allow courts to file cases completely online and reduce the need for paper copies, as well postage and visits to clerk's offices

Martin County Clerk Gerald Montgomery says he didn't know the exact monetary amount of the grant, but the the server alone will cost an estimated $8,000.

The Division of State Court Administration is responsible for ordering the necessary equipment in bulk and then distributing the items to the recipients. The new equipment received by the qualifying courts will all be the same or similar models. The grant could not be used to purchase software.

"The Indiana Supreme Court is committed to the most effective use of technology to ensure that courts can operate with efficiency and fairness - e-filing is a key component of our modernization plans," says Supreme Court Justice Steven David.

Court documents can be filed using one of many certified e-filing providers, including one provided at no cost by the state. After the filing is complete, notification will be received via email after the documents are filed. They will also receive notification by email when when an opposing party e-files a document, or when the court issues an order.
