(BROWNSTOWN)- Attorney Alan L. Marshall was many miles from Jackson County when he responded to a Southern Indiana chief public defender job posting.
Marshall, who is a former Jackson County attorney and Jennings County prosecutor, was serving in the Mohave County public defender's office in Kingman, Arizona.
He has set up at 213 E. Cross St. in Brownstown where Dr. Joel L. McGill had housed his medical practice. The office will begin receiving phone calls on December 15.
He has already hired a legal secretary, Pam Mayo of Seymour, and a senior deputy, Jeremy Braunstein who worked with Marshall in Kingman.
Braunstein is originally from Indiana, having worked as a public defender in Marion County and prosecutor in St. Joseph County.
He has also hired Jan Graves, a retired Indiana State detective, to serve as investigator.
Two more attorney positions will soon be filled, Marshall says.
Case appointments will begin next month and court appearances will start after January 1.
Defendants who can't hire an attorney will get immediate representation.
The need for a public defender's office has been a priority of Circuit Judge Richard Poynter since he got elected in 2011.
