Former Mitchell Man Killed In Georgia Accident

(DEKALB CO., GA) - A motorcyclist is dead after colliding with a vehicle in DeKalb County early Thursday morning.

The crash happened just after midnight in the westbound lanes of I-285 near the intersection with Ashford Dunwoody Road.

According to police, Robert McCarthy, formerly of Mitchell, was riding his motorcycle at a high-rate of speed when he collided with the rear end of a dump truck. The impact caused the motorcycle to explode into flames.

McCarthy was pronounced dead on the scene.

No charges have been filed at this time and the crash remains under investigation. Police say it is unclear if drugs or alcohol factored into the crash.

Staff Sergeant McCarthy enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard in December of 2005, attended Basic Training the summer of 2006 and Advanced Individual Training in the summer of 2007 as an 11B (Infantryman) at Fort Benning, Georgia. Staff Sergeant McCarthy deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom with Bco, 1-151 Infantry, Martinsville, IN in 2008. Upon his return from Iraq he moved to Fort Benning, Georgia to be with his family and transferred to the Georgia Army National Guard. His time in the Georgia Guard was spent at several different units with a deployment to Afghanistan in 2013 with the 201st CS HQ based in Fort Gordon, Georgia and finally ending up at Aco, 1-121 Infantry.

Staff Sergeant McCarthy's military and civilian education includes: Warrior Leader Course, Air Assault Course, Airborne Course and is a Graduate from Mitchell High School, Mitchell, Indiana.

Staff Sergeant McCarthy's awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (M Device), Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Expert Rifle Qualification Badge.

Staff Sergeant McCarthy is survived by his Father Brian G. McCarthy, mother Holly M. McCarthy and brother Michael B. McCarthy.
