(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday approved contracts with Cornwell Communications of Bloomington to replace the phone systems at all county buildings.

The cost will be $46,342.88. That cost will cover installation and equipment and 134 desk phones and seven cordless phones at the county offices and equipment and about 45 phones at the Sheriff's Department.

The new system will eliminate long distance phone call charges, which currently is more than $4,000 a month not including the monthly service bill - that amount does not include the cost of long distant calls at the Sheriff's Department.

The county will pay a monthly bill of $3,922 and the Sheriff's Department will have around a $500 bill.

In other business:

The commissioners extended the primary care clinic contract with St. Vincent Dunn and IU Health Hospital. The clinic allows county employees to seek treatment at no cost.

"It is free for those seeking primary or urgent care or a wellness visit," says Miles Parker of Parker Group. "There is no out-of-pocket cost for the employee or their families."

Parker says the number of those using the service could be better.

The commissioners asked Parker to provide employees literature about the program to remind them that it is available.

Sheriff Mike Branham reported there were 116 inmates being housed at the jail as of Tuesday morning. Of those inmates, 26 were females and 9 were Department of Correction holds.

Branham also voiced concern about the limestone deteriorating at the front of the jail and the rear northeast corner.

"It is getting pretty bad," Branham added. "The salt has just ate away at the limestone."

Branham received one bid to repair the limestone for $23,700. That bid would pay for the repairs to the limestone and to place a protective sealant on it to prevent salt damage.

He also voiced concerns about the ramp in front of the jail

The commissioners gave Branham permission to seek bids on repairing or replacing the ramp and to possible combine that with the repairs needed to the limestone.

Highway Superintendent David Holmes reported highway crews were preparing for the first snowfall.

"We hate to see it come, but we will be ready," Holmes added.

Work also continues on Bridge 89, on Judah Logan Road over Salt Creek. Crews plan to set beams on Thursday, but that work may be pushed back due to the weather.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported that the multiple fatality with a hazardous material spill simulation at the junction of Ind. 37 and Old Ind. 37 on Friday, November 13 went well.

"We still have work to do handling a large hazardous spill, but we did great on the mass casualty exercise," Luchauer told the commissioners. "The exercise went well and we learned a lot."

The commissioner voted to appoint Hope Flores to the Community Corrections Board

The commissioners approved the 2016:

  • Commissioner's meeting schedule
  • Lawrence County Council's meeting schedule
  • The holiday schedule
  • The Claims schedule
  • The Payroll schedule
