AmeriCorps Offering Positions In Brown, Greene, Martin, Morgan, Orange Counties

(UNDATED) - AmeriCorps will be offering part-time member positions in school districts to promote coordinated school health work in Brown, Greene, Martin, Morgan and Orange counties.

According to a press release, members will use the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) coordinated school health approach to assist districts with improving the school health environment for students and staff.

If awarded the position, the part-time employee will assist schools in the areas of health services, health and physical education, employee wellness, nutrition services, community involvement, safety, physical activity, and social and emotional health.

The positions are slated for a 900 hour commitment and must be filled by August 31.

According to a press release, the benefits include a living stipend and an educational award that can be used for previous education loans, or for future education endeavors.

The qualifications for the position include:

Knowledge of school corporation organization and management.
Able to collaborate and partner.
Interest in community health advancement.
Ability to work with people of all ages.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Significant technology and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite -- especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

Position Summary

Organize and support Coordinated School Health systems within the school corporation, collaborating with supervisors of multiple school health components, along with community partners, to improve and maintain the safety, health, and well-being of students and school employees, thereby, contributing to school success. In addition, the coordinator will facilitate the recruitment of volunteers to promote family and community engagement.

Essential Functions

Regularly convene and chair a corporation-wide team of Coordinated School Health component supervisors to assure communication and collaboration in the efficient implementation of all safety and health-related policies, programs, and initiatives.
Assist with development and recruitment of the local Health Council for the purpose of soliciting broad-based input and participation from the school, community, family and student stakeholders as well as to meet statutory requirements for advisory committees related to:
Sexual health
Wellness Policy planning, implementation, monitoring and compliance reporting.
Site Supervision: Report to IU Health Manager of Coordinated School Health and assigned school corporation supervisor.
Use appropriate assessments and evaluation tools, including the School Health Index, data, and resources to determine school health and safety priorities and share with appropriate stakeholders.
Establish and coordinate efforts among community partners and organizations.
Collaborate with all school employees for the promotion of student and staff safety and health in support of improved academic outcomes.
Assist with scheduling professional development opportunities for school personnel promoting safety, health, and well-being.
Along with input from CSH Manager access and evaluate new evidence based, scientifically accurate instructional materials and monitor implementation.
Collect data and submit appropriate reports to AmeriCorps, IU SPH and IU Health leaders.
Participate as a team member of the AmeriCorps South Central Region CSH team.
Obtain support, as needed, from the Indiana Department of Education Office of Coordinated School Health and the Indiana Department of Public Health, Division of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention.
Attend conferences and meetings as required; and perform other duties as deemed necessary by the coordinating partners.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work: Exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and or 10-25 pounds of force frequently and or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

General Requirements

Attends AmeriCorps related meetings, mandatory in-services, and professional development requirements.
Complete a minimum of 1700 hours by August 31, 2016, 12-20 percent of this will be committed to training and professional development.
Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing services.
Demonstrates responsibility for his/her scope of responsibility.
Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility.
Performs other duties as required and completes all functions as per policy and procedure.
Requires working knowledge of communication tools such as fax machines, email, telephone and computers including Microsoft Office products.
Supports a climate of effective communication.
