West Nile Virus Discovered In Washington County

Last updated on Monday, October 5, 2015

(WASHINGTON CO.) - Washington County Health Department has confirmed a mosquito has tested positive for West Nile virus.

Health department spokesman Chris Boling confirmed the finding Thursday afternoon. While the season is winding down and the cooler weather will mean fewer insects, a danger still exists.

"People need to be extra careful," he says. The first and best line of defense is to avoid being bitten, he said. Use of repellants containing DEET is considered by many experts to be the most effective way to keep mosquitos at bay.
Boling also reminds property owners to make sure there is no standing water on their land. Even small amounts of water can be mosquito breeding grounds.
