Unborn Baby Has 50 Percent Chance Of Survival After Van Crash

Last updated on Thursday, October 1, 2015

(UNDATED) - Doctors are hopeful about the status of a baby born just before its mom died from injuries in last week’s I-69 van crash.

29-year-old Christela Georges of Washington and a native of Haiti, was 24 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash. She later died of injuries but doctors were able to save the baby.

The baby is in critical but stable condition at an Evansville Hospital. Doctors say babies born at 24 weeks generally have a 50% survival rate.

The accident happened on September 22 near the Mackey and Ft. Branch exit on I-69 in Gibson County.

Todd Ringle with the Indiana State Police says one of the back tires on a 16-passenger van blew. There were 24 people in the van at the time of the accident. Ringle says several of the tires had dry rot.

In addition, Ringle he asserts there were not enough seat belts for 24 people. The belts that were in the van were lap belts, and they weren't being worn correctly because of the benches.

Also killed in the crash was 60-year-old Gena Moise of Washington, who was also from Haiti.

The van was taking temporary workers, who are employed by Service Express in Washington, IN, to Ameriqual on Highway 41 in Evansville.
