Two Washington County Deputies Injured By Alleged Drunk Driver

Last updated on Tuesday, October 27, 2015

(SALEM) - Two Washington County Sheriff’s deputies were injured after an accident involving a drunk driver on State Road 160, west of Salem Saturday night.

According to Sheriff Roger Newlon, both officers were treated and released.

Deputies Brad Naugle and Joe Keltner were called to the scene of a one-vehicle accident at 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 60 and Hammond Road. The caller told the dispatcher the car was inverted.

Washington County EMS and Salem Fire Department were also alerted, but were told not to responded after officers arrived on the scene.

But then at 11:25 p.m. dispatch received a 911 call requesting an ambulance to Hammond Road saying an officer's patrol car had been struck by a vehicle.

According to Sheriff Roger Newlon, while a wrecker was loading the vehicle involved in the accident, 51-year-old Eric Wheeler of Vallonia drove his vehicle into Deputy Naugle's parked squad car, the wrecker and the car being loaded onto the wrecker.

Sheriff Newlon says Deputy Naugle was in his vehicle doing paperwork associated with the first accident and Deputy Keltner was outside the vehicle when both were scraped by Wheeler's bumper.

Both Naugle and Keltner who suffered minor injuries, were taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.

Salem Police Department Deputy Chris Cauble arrested Wheeler on a charge of operating while intoxicated.
