(DANIEL BOONE NATIONAL FOREST) - Two missing boys, one from Bloomington, who disappeared from a Kentucky campground Thursday evening were found safe and unharmed Friday afternoon.
The two boys; 7-year-old Adrian Ross of Bloomington and his cousin, 5-year-old Michael Esposito of Batavia, Ohio; were on a weekend family camping trip at the Koomer Ridge Campgrounds in the Daniel Boone National Forest, when Esposito's father and the boys' grandfather noticed the boys had wandered off while the adults were setting up camp.
Wolfe County Search and Rescue and the Kentucky State Police soon began a search of the area. The campground is located in the national forest's Red River Gorge area.
"It's a very dangerous area due to the terrain, the cliffs," says a, says Kentucky State Police Trooper Joe Veeneman. "It's a common area that's used for camping as well as rock climbing."
Overnight temperatures dipped into the mid-50s as multiple search and rescue teams conducted ground searches and a helicopter was brought in to do an infrared sweep from the air. Searchers also used dogs to try to track the boys. At least nine search and rescue agencies assisted.
The boys were found at 1:50 p.m. Friday near the Silvermine Arch Trail after about 15 total hours searching, according to a press release from Kentucky State Police.
The boys were found unharmed and were returned to their families.
