(BLOOMINGTON) - The more than 500 students living at Indiana University’s Read Hall don’t think it’s funny that someone keeps setting off the fire alarm interrupting their sleep.
The alarm has been set off 26 times in the past week, in Read's Curry wing on the second and fifth floors, according to Bloomington Fire Department officials.
The Herald Times reports, that each time the alarm sounds 10 firefighters and one battalion chief in protective gear race to the location. The false alarms are causing safety risks to the public and firefighters. False alarms also cause residents to become lax, causing them to not want to leave a building in an event of a real fire.
Indiana University police say someone is using some kind of body spray to intentionally activate the smoke detectors. They are currently conducting an investigation and have increased patrols at the residence hall in hopes of catching the suspect.
Police say setting off a fire alarm is a criminal offense.
IU Spokesman Mark Land added it is also a violation of the university's student code of conduct and once caught will face disciplinary actions. IU Provost Lauren Robel on Tuesday sent an email urging Read residents to step up and report suspicious behavior and other details to IU police.
