Shoals Man Sentenced To Six Years On Burglary Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, October 21, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Shoals man was sentenced to six years in prison after he broke into the White River Bait and Tackle Show in Williams.

Lawrence County Superior Court II Judge William Sleva sentenced 27-year-old Trenton Chastain on Thursday.

He will receive credit for 248 days already served in jail and 83 earned credit days.

Chastain broke into the White River Bait & Tackle not once, but twice.

Lawrence County Police arrested Chastain in February after he was caught by the shop owners.

At the time of that arrest, he was suspected of breaking into the store earlier in the month.

According to Sheriff Mike Branham, a witness, who lives near the store, told police they heard a loud vehicle pass and looked outside and saw a light-colored 1976 Chevrolet pickup truck with only one working headlight near the shop at the old Williams School on Ridge Road.

The witness contacted the owner Chris Amstutz, who went to the store and discovered the burglary and contacted the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.

Store security video captured images of the truck and the man.

"The male was is in and out of the business in less than two minutes," Branham said. "The cash register drawer was open and cigarettes were missing."

No money was taken, because there was none in the cash register.

Then on February 10 at 12:27 a.m. Tuesday, a caller reported that the same pickup truck was back at the bait shop.

Lawrence County officers rushed to the business. They then received another call that the man had entered the shop and was being restrained by the owners.

When officers arrived, they found the Chevrolet pickup truck and the door had been pried open with a crowbar.

Chastain was being restrained inside. He was arrested without incident.
