(JOHNSON CO) - On Wednesday, a Johnson County man was charged in the death of his 2-month-old daughter after he admitted to harming the baby after she wouldn’t stop crying.
According to a probable cause affidavit, 18-year-old Jamison Cyrus Allen Hendley, of Franklin formerly of Mitchell, was charged with battery causing death of a child, a Level 2 felony.
He was arrested after police questioned him about the bruises, brain injuries, bleeding and other serious wounds that his daughter Braelyn Hendley suffered on Sept. 30.
Braelyn, who was born in Bedford, died at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health at 4:47 p.m. Sunday. Valves from Braelyn's heart were donated to two other infants, according to Michelle Ingle of Orleans, the baby's grandmother. She was then taken off life support.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the investigation began around 6 a.m. Oct. 1 when investigators from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office were called to Riley Hospital about an infant with life-threatening injuries.
Police say the child's mother Autumn Danielle Grissom, came home to find her child was not "breathing right."
Grissom, who is from Mitchell, told Hendley that she was taking her daughter Braelyn to the hospital. Hendley told her he was not going to the hospital with her, according to a press release.
Once at Johnson Memorial Hospital, medical staff requested to transfer the child to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health by helicopter.
At Riley, medical staff reported the infant was suffering from injuries that resulted from abuse, including bruises, seizures, significant brain injury, significant retinal bleeding and retinal detachment.
After Braelyn Hendley was hospitalized, police went to Jamison Hendley's Franklin home to speak with him. He agreed to go to the sheriff's office for questioning.
During the interview, Hendley told police he had been watching his daughter the day before when he heard her crying, and picked the child up in an attempt to calm her down.
He then told police he was angry and could have shaken his daughter too hard. He also stated that the child fell from a stroller, and that he may have held her above a chair and "let her go."
He told police he was afraid to call 911 because he knew he had done something wrong.
In the wake of the baby's death, police again talked to Hendley during that interview he admitted he threw his daughter across the room and onto a wicker chair when she wouldn't stop crying. The baby fell out of the chair and onto the hardwood floor.
Jamison Hendley remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail.
