Police To Investigate Unauthorized Use Of Auditor's Credit Card

Last updated on Friday, October 16, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - An investigation has been launched into possible unauthorized use of the Monroe County auditor’s credit card.

The Herald Times reports that Monroe County Auditor Steve Saulter and the county commissioners have asked the sheriff's department to look into nearly $1,300 in undocumented purchases from local stores.

Saulter said the purchases on the county-issued card were discovered Friday during a review of credit card transactions. Purchases from Walmart and Kroger caught his attention, since neither are places where employees would shop for office needs.

Only two employees -- the auditor and his chief deputy -- should have access to the card, Saulter said. It is kept in the office and, if necessary, on his person. Saulter is the main person authorized to use it.

This is not the first time police have been called in to investigate county employees' unauthorized uses of cards. Former Monroe County Auditor Amy Gerstman was charged with using a county-issued Visa card to make $11,000 in personal purchases for items including women's clothing, airline tickets and her children's school tuition.

Gerstman was sentenced to three months of house arrest after pleading guilty in September of last year.
