Montgomery Woman Dies After Vehicle Rear-Ended By Semi-Trailer

(LOOGOOTEE) - A Montgomery woman died after the vehicle she was riding was struck in the rear by a semi-trailer Tuesday on U.S.50 between Montgomery and Loogootee.

According to a Daviess County Police report, 79-year-old Elizabeth "Liz" Nolan, was riding in a 2013 Lincoln MKZ, driven by her husband 81-year-old George Nolan. The couple was traveling east on U.S.50 and has stopped to make a left turn into the parking lot of the Daviess-Martin County Medical Center when an eastbound semi-tractor trailer driven by 39-year-old Jerry Patton,of Lawrenceville, IL. hit the rear of their car.

Police say the collision crushed the rear end and the passenger side of the car and sent it off the north side of the highway into the yard of the medical clinic.

The semi had front end damage and stopped in a field on the southside of U.S. 50

Emergency personnel from the Clinic rushed to the scene to find Elizabeth unresponsive and not breathing. They began CPR and she was transported by ambulance to Daviess Community Hospital where she later died.

George Nolan was taken to Daviess Community Hospital and then flown by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital.

Patten was not injured.

U.S. 50 between Montgomery and Loogootee was closed for two hours while officers investigated the crash which remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were: the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, Montgomery and Cannelburg Fire Departments, Southwest Ambulance Service, Daviess-Martin Medical Clinic, Indiana State Police and the Daviess County Coroner's Office.
