Man Arrested After Leading Police On Two County Chase

Last updated on Friday, October 23, 2015

(UNDATED) - A man who led police on a chase that began in Columbus and ended north of Brownstown late Tuesday was arrested nearly a dozen hours later.

19-year-old William D. Deckard of Columbus faces Level 6 felony charges of auto theft, theft and resisting law enforcement by fleeing in a vehicle.

The incident began around 9 p.m. with an attempted traffic stop at State Road 11 and State Road 46 when police attempted to stop Deckard who was in a stolen truck from Ripley County. The pursuit ended in the 3000 block of County Road 100W near Brownstown when the driver fled on foot into a wooded area, according to Jackson County Reserve Officer Scott Davis.

A passenger, 25-year-old Cassandra M. Smith of Logansport, was arrested on preliminary charges including theft, auto theft, resisting law enforcement by fleeing in a vehicle and false informing.

Police say the stolen truck also appears to be related to a burglary in Ripley County and an abandoned vehicle contained stolen tools related to that burglary.
