Man Arrested After Becoming Belligerent With Hospital Staff

Last updated on Friday, October 2, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was taken to jail after he refused to cooperate with St. Vincent Dunn Hospital staff or Bedford Police officers.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, on Wednesday, officers and emergency crews were called to a home on M Street after a woman reported a man at her house was unresponsive.

That man was 36-year-old Rhett Lewis of Bedford.

Lewis was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and was admitted because he was intoxicated.

"He was at an extremely high level of intoxication," Parsley says.

Officers were called to the hospital at 12:12 a.m. Thursday morning after a report that Lewis was being uncooperative with hospital staff.

"He was being belligerent and aggressive," Parsley added. "Officers were able to calm him down and even stayed while he was being treated and helped with the exam."

But Lewis wasn't calm for long.

Officers were again called to the hospital after Lewis pulled the I.V. out of his arm and again became aggressive with hospital staff.

The hospital discharged Lewis because of his behavior and refusal of treatment.

"He told us he had a friend he could stay with," Parsley says. "So officers took him to that home, but there was no one there. So for the safety of Mr. Lewis and the community Mr. Lewis was arrested on a charge of public intoxication."
