Loogootee School Board Declines School Field Trip To Ireland

Last updated on Friday, October 23, 2015

(LOOGOOTEE) - The Loogootee School Board Tuesday night declined to approve a teacher-led high school field trip to Ireland next year.

Board President Nancy Summers says the board followed a recommendation from the administration who opposed the field trip saying it was unacceptable to have two teachers out of the classroom for a week.

The Washington Times reports, the Spanish Club field trip had been proposed for February 12-17, 2016, and would have been in conjunction with a similar trip by students from Loogootee's sister school, Vallentuna Gymnasium near Stockholm, Sweden.

This past July, students from both schools visited Costa Rica. That field trip had been approved by the school board because it was taken during the summer.

Board Member Tim Bradley supported the concept of the field trip, and had even volunteered to be a chaperone. He blamed the stringent testing requirements mandated by the state Legislature for leading the administration to oppose the field trip during a school week.
