Fire Destroys Old Grain Mill In Wheatland

Last updated on Monday, October 19, 2015

(WHEATLAND) - Seven fire departments battled a massive fire in Wheatland Thursday night into Friday morning.

Just after 7 p.m. firefighters with Steen Township were called to the property of an oldĀ grain mill at 511 East Jefferson Street.

Firefighters and tankers from six other departments were called in to help knock the fire down, including Harrison, Palmyra, Vigo, Washington and Vincennes Townships. Crews from Daviess County also assisted at the scene.

Steen Township Fire Chief Tim Yochum says the property owner was burning various debris earlier in the day, but the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Firefighters were kept busy as several small brush fires popped up near the scene. Crews made sure surrounding homes and properties were protected from the fire.

Train traffic was also suspended, since the railroad tracks were so close to the fire.

Fire Crews remained on the scene well into Friday morning putting out hotspots to prevent the fire from rekindling.
