(BLOOMINGTON) - A fire that damaged two basement rooms of a building on College Avenue caused the evacuation of a few downtown businesses, including Darn Good Soup, Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a report of smoke in the apartment hallways of 107 N. College Ave. at 1:37 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the front of Darn Good Soup.

According to Bloomington Fire Department Sgt. Danny Gillespie, firefighters evacuated the restaurant as well as other businesses and apartments on the north and south side of the street.

Firefighters says there was fire damage to two basement rooms and smoke damage to the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

College Avenue, between Sixth Street and Kirkwood Avenue, was closed to traffic while emergency responders to the area.

The soup store is closed, and owner Nels Boerner says he does not know when it will open again.
